Roopali Malhotra is the General Counsel for the Ellison Medical Institute where she oversees all legal matters for the organization, providing strategic counsel and ensuring compliance across a broad portfolio that includes labor and employment, healthcare, research collaborations, licensing, intellectual property, data privacy, and general corporate and not-for-profit matters.
She was previously the Senior Advisor and Chief of Staff to the Vice President at the University of Southern California, working with Trustees, administration, and students on issues related to compliance, misconduct, and internal investigations, in addition to policies, crisis, and communications. Prior, she served as Assistant University Counsel at the University of Illinois, managing transactions related to publicly and privately-funded research projects, real estate & construction, and entertainment & athletics, in addition to advising the Board and Faculty Senate on issues related to the state’s sunshine and ethics laws.
Her philanthropic interests include education and civic engagement. She serves as Secretary for the Ellison Institute Research Foundation, centered on improving the patient experience and changing how the world delivers health and medicine, as well as Trustee for the Alliance Public-Charter School Foundation, an organization committed to delivering high-quality education to underrepresented communities in south and east Los Angeles.
She received a Juris Doctorate from University of Illinois College of Law, a Masters in Bioethics from University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and a Bachelors in Life Science from Pennsylvania State University College of Science.
