Ellison Junior Scholars
A Selective Summer STEM Program for High School Juniors
“We believe that passion, coupled with outstanding aptitude, are the hallmarks for success.”
Each summer, a select group of high school students joins scientists, oncologists, and university faculty at the Ellison Medical Institute in Los Angeles for three weeks of hands-on cancer research. Admission is merit-based, and there is no cost to participate.
Since 2010, Junior Scholars has given students a real place in oncology research as they explore one central question: How do we find the best treatment for each individual patient?
Program Highlights
→ Conduct hands-on experiments using state-of-the-art laboratory instruments.
→ Tackle a patient-centered precision oncology challenge.
→ Learn from university faculty and EMI scientists and clinicians, including oncologists, physician assistants, nurses, researchers, and clinical trials specialists.
→ Discover how AI is transforming medicine: diagnosing cancer, guiding treatment, predicting patient outcomes, and accelerating drug discovery.
→ Get an inside look at clinical research, including how clinical trials are designed, conducted, and overseen to keep patients safe.
→ Collaborate on a multidisciplinary team project that mirrors how modern biomedical research is conducted.
→ Develop scientific communication skills through written analysis and a culminating presentation.
→ Connect with more than 100 Junior Scholars alumni and receive continued guidance on STEM careers, college preparation, and graduate or medical school.
Who Should Apply?
High school juniors are eligible to apply and attend the summer before senior year. Current seniors are not eligible. Students who are curious about biology, medicine, cancer research, biotechnology, data science, AI, or other health-related STEM fields are encouraged to apply. No prior laboratory research experience is required.
How Do I Apply?
Admission is competitive. Applicants submit:
→ A personal statement conveying their passion in STEM or medicine and their future goals
→ High school transcripts
