Scott D. Patterson, PhD
Scott D. Patterson, PhD is a Visiting Member at the Ellison Medical Institute. He is working closely with EMI teams to guide biomarker validation and translational assay development, helping advance promising markers toward clinical utility.
Dr. Scott Patterson is a pharmaceutical and diagnostics consultant with expertise in translational oncology, biomarker discovery, and molecular diagnostics. He brings more than three decades of industry experience, following earlier academic research, focused on advancing biomarkers from discovery into clinical and diagnostic application with a focus on delivering solutions that accelerate patient impact.
Dr. Patterson spent ten years at Gilead Sciences, Inc., where he led biomarker discovery and translational programs supporting oncology, inflammation and fibrosis, and HBV/HIV cure initiatives. His work emphasized the integration of molecular biomarkers into clinical development and their progression into clinically deployable diagnostic strategies, as well as the establishment of translational research collaborations linking clinical, molecular, and population-scale data (including the Renown Institute for Health Innovation Strategic Collaboration).
Prior to Gilead, Dr. Patterson held senior leadership roles at Amgen, Inc., where he established and led enterprise-wide biomarker and in vitro diagnostics programs including the validation and implementation of KRAS and RAS biomarkers. He previously served as Vice President of Proteomics at Celera Genomics Group, directing protein-based target and biomarker discovery efforts, and as Chief Scientific Officer at Farmal Biomedicines, LLC.
Dr. Patterson has served on scientific advisory boards and steering committees for translational research and diagnostics partnerships and was named an inaugural Queensland Global Connector in 2024 in recognition of his contributions to international collaboration.
He received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Physiology and Pharmacology from The University of Queensland, Australia, and was previously a Staff Investigator at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Dr. Patterson has authored more than 120 scientific publications, 25 book chapters, and holds nine patents.
